Description

Woody Allen's wonderful comedy was his first film with Diane Keaton, a relationship that would eventually bring them both Oscar ("Annie Hall"). Allen plays Allen, a fanatical movie buff with an outrageous recurring hallucination: Humphrey Bogart offering tips on how to make it with the ladies. His married friends Dick and Linda (Tony Roberts and Diane Keaton) fix him up with several eligible young ladies, but his self-confidence is so weak that he's a total failure with them all. Eventually, Allen discovers that there is one woman he's himself with: Linda, his best friend's wife. The final scene is a terrific takeoff on "Casablanca's" classic ending, complete with roaring plane propellers, heavy fog and Bogart-style trench coats.

When you watch a film on your own you don't always laugh out aloud , this film made me howl with laughter. Full to the brim with classic comedy quotes and woody's comedy timing is genius

Despite the fact Woody Allen didn't actually direct this, it was based on his Broadway play and he also stars as the archetypal nervous Jewish New Yorker the public came to love. Full of neuroses and featuring all Allen's trademark witticisms and observations about life and the complications of relationships, this is a very funny and touching film about struggling to cope with reality when the lure of escapism and the movies seems so much more appealing. Woody is very well supported by Diane Keaton (who looks gorgeous here) and Tony Roberts. So, ignore the fact that it's directed by Herb Ross (absolutely no disrespect meant!) and is set in San Francisco rather than New York, as this is 100% Woody Allen. Highly recommended!!

Well what can I say that already hasnt been said about this absolute classic, except as testament to the superb script my friends and I are still quoting the punch lines some 30 years later! Allen blends classic neurosis with sweet romance and the result is wonderful. If youre a Woody Allen fan and you havent seen this do yourself a big favour. You wont be dissapointed Definitely amongst my top ten movies of all time
