Description

Based on the critically-acclaimed novel by Jonathan Safran Foer, "Everything is Illuminated" tells the story of a young man's quest to find the woman who saved his grandfather in a small Ukrainian town that was wiped off the map by the Nazi invasion. What starts out as a journey to piece together one family's story under absurd circumstances turns into a meaningful journey with a powerful series of revelations -- the importance of remembrance, the perilous nature of secrets, the legacy of the Holocaust, and the meaning of friendship.

  • Borat with some intelligence? A mixture that doesn't quite work.

This film follows the quaint story of a socially-inept Jewish man who travels to Ukraine to find information about his long lost relatives. Never too sure if it wants to be a comedy or a sentemental journey of self-discovery, the film doesn't ever seem to find its footing. It is full of cliched images of the former Soviet block, and characters who seem more based on Borat than real Ukrainians. Its a shame - without the silliness and the slushy moments, it could have been excellent and powerful, but it doesn't quite hit the mark. Instead it leaves a slightly bland taste in the mouth and a feeling that it could all have been so much better.

This is a very, very, very funny movie, that is destined to gain a huge cult following. A very strange, obsessive American Jew travels to the Ukraine in order to discover the original home of his grandfather... his guides on this "very rigid search" a young hip Ukrainian called Alex whose english is "not so premium," Alex's grumpy grandfather as the driver and Sammy Davies Jr Jr, their demented dog. The movie is beautifully shot, has a great soundtrack and is both hilarious and touching at the same time. By the way, Alex is played by Eugene Hutz, front man of Gypsy Punk band Gogol Bordello, who actually turns out to be a superb actor.
