I have seen many Shark movies and after Jaws this is one of the best Shark movies. Very exciting until the end and for the movie being so old, the sharks do like more realistic then in Sharknado. Highly recommend.
  • It's okay for a old movie.

Better than Jaws but not amazing. Average movie with Average acting.
  • Not 1080p as advertised

5 stars for the film and while the film itself is great the 1080p version of this film, while actually 1080p in resolution, is very clearly mastered and upscaled from a 720p source and is horribly pixellated. Stick with the blu-ray in this case.

I have loved this movie since I was 12. The plot is unique even by today's standards- A group of Scientists are trying to find the cure for alzheimer's disease in the brain of a Shark. Why? Because Sharks never show any loss of Brain activity over their lifespan. Genius! So our leading Lady, Dr Susan McAlester (Saffron Burrows), has a dilema. Russell Franklin (Samuel L Jackson) her sponsor, is about to pull the plug on her project because it hasn't yielded enough results and because a test Shark escapes the research facility and attacks a boat of College students that are saved by the timely arrival of shark wrangler, Carter Blake (Thomas Jane). McAlester assures Franklin that she is ready to deliver results that will make him very rich if he gives her another 2 days. At the Facility we are introduced to a host of characters including Dr Jim Whitlock (Stellan Skarsgard), Janice Higgins (Jacqueline McKenzie), Tom Scoggins (Michael Rapaport), the lovable religious chef Sherman Dudley (LL Cool J) refered to as Preacher, and his abuse spouting Parrot known only as 'Bird'. With Franklin ready to oversee results of the team's final tests, Blake hops into the Shark pen to lure the biggest of the three test sharks into the air pressure locked wetlab. What the group doesn't know, is that in order to harvest enough of the potentially life-saving protein complex from the Shark's Brain cavity, McAlester and Whitlock have been using gene therapies to increase the size of the brains in their test sharks. And to quote the film- "As a side effect, the Sharks got smarter". After a serious incident during the harvesting of the protein complex, the wetlab is flooded and the facility damaged enough to slowly start sinking, forcing the team to attempt to escape their rapidly flooding facility, as the Sharks prowl freely through the flooded areas. And now we have our film. It's clever, it's intense, it has a great cast of characters, it has a wonderful score, and it's got some impressive animatronics and 1999 visual effects. For keen Shark lovers, and Shark movie lovers alike there is also a clever homage to Jaws near the beginning. Is the movie without flaw or error? No, but it's still an absolute masterclass of suspense, tension, and primal fear. It's a thrill ride of a film, and still to this day remains in this movie lover's opinion the best Shark Movie since Jaws.

I love this film sooo much! The animatronic sharks look real, but the CGI ones are a little bit of a let down. Other than that I adore this film so much! Buy not rent!
