Description

Academy Award-winning drama stars screen-legend Humphrey Bogart ("Casablanca," "The African Queen"), Walter Huston ("Yankee Doodle Dandy"), and Tim Holt ("The Magnificent Ambersons") as three ill-fated prospectors who set out across the Mexican desert in search of gold but instead find mistrust, betrayal, and death. The legendary John Huston ("The African Queen," "The Maltese Falcon") won an Oscar for his superb direction and screenplay. His father, Walter, received an Oscar for Supporting Actor. Considered by many as Bogart's greatest role, this is a true American classic and was recently selected as one of the fifty best American films of all time by the prestigious American Film Institute. Look for an appearance by young Emmy-winner Robert Blake (TV's "Baretta," "Money Train"). Inducted into the Library of Congress National Film Registry.

This must be one of the best movies ever made. Love the acting and great story. This is a film you can watch over and over again a tale of greed that we can all relate to. Top quality film all time great.

A classic film of ambition turning to greed and mistrust ending in paranoia and insanity. This is a classic Bogart film with terrific performances all round - especially from Walter Huston as the lovable but tough old man - probably the "real life" inspiration for the gold prospector character in "Toy Story 2". The subject of the film is "there's gold in them their hills" - the so called treasure in the Sierra Madre mountain range. John Huston (who also directed Bogart in "The African Queen") directs his own dad (Walter Huston) who plays the Wiley old prospector who just knows he's going to strike gold. He leads a 'down at heel' Bogart, and (relatively unknown) Tim Holt into the mountains where the fun really starts. After months of hard gruelling work mining the gold, their task is then to keep hold of it - and more importantly to keep hold of their sanity as the "deadly sins" take hold - greed, avarice, pride, and Envy. An often dark, and (quite literally) gritty tale of greed with one of the best performances of insanity every seen in the cinema - perhaps only matched by Bogart's other portral of paranoia in "The Caine Mutiny". And now the small print - I'm a great fan of Humphry Bogart, but for me, this film is right up there - along with: o Casablanca - "We'll always have...Casablanca" o The African Queen - Which was actually shot on location in Africa - Walter Huston and Humphry Bogart claim to have avoided malaria by staying drunk - "Anything insect that took a bite - died of alcohol poisoning" o Key Largo - Fantastic cast - including Edward G. Robinson. Literally a very stormy night. o The Maltese Falcon - Another great cast including the "usual suspects" - Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre - both in Casablanca. o The Big Sleep - "I won't play the sap for you - I won't play the sap for any woman"
