Description

Jack Walsh (Robert De Niro) is a tough ex-cop turned bounty hunter. Jonathan "The Duke" Mardukas (Charles Grodin) is a sensitive accountant who embezzled $15 million from the Mob, gave it to charity and then jumped bail. Jack's in for a cool $100,000 if he can deliver The Duke from New York to L.A. on time. And alive. Sounds like just another Midnight Run (a piece of cake in bounty hunter slang), but it turns into a cross-country chase. The FBI is after The Duke to testify - the Mob is after him for revenge - and Walsh is after him to just shut up. If someone else doesn't do the job, the two unlikely partners may end up killing each other in this hilarious, action-filled blockbuster from producer-director Martin Brest (Beverly Hills Cop).

The remarkable thing about this movie is that it is the perfect example of at least 4 different genres - a buddy movie, a road movie, a mob movie, a comedy thriller - and it still manages to elicit stunning performances from its two leads and from the wonderful supporting cast (Dennis Farina and Joe Pantoliano are perhaps first among equals). De Niro shows why he can beat most actors of his generation into a cocked hat, he is tough, hilarious, tender and moving by turns. This is superb film with every contributor at the height of his/her powers. See it!

Hilarious and deeply touching in equal measure - this is a one-off gem of a film! The scene in the restaurant car between Grodin and De Niro, when the two discuss the relative merits and demerits of smoking and eating fatty foods, puts both actors, and screenwriter George Gallo, up there among the best of the best in the film business. So real, so very, very funny! Spectacular chase scenes too!

This for me is the greatest ("there's always something happening" genre) movie ever made just ahead of "What's Up Doc" & "Bringing Up Baby", the performances by Bobby DN, Chas Grodin, Yaphet Koto, Dennis Farina & John Ashton are simply their best ever. The chemistry between the 2 leading men is fantastic & I never tire of watching it! The plot might be a bit weak in some people's eyes (see wikipedia) but not in mine as it flowed almost flawlessly throughout & the scene at McCarron & then at LAX were tense in the former & emotional in the latter! GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 6 out of 5

Right. Before anyone says anything, I know it's not the Godfather, Raging Bull or Taxi Driver; okay? Put those thoughts to one side and give this a go. This is a thoroughly entertaining road movie with an excellent plot. De Niro & Charles Grodin play off each other so well that it makes the movie effortless to watch; prepare to laugh from start to finish. This is possibly one of De Nero's less known films, but rest assured, it's not one of his weakest. Compared to some of his more recent comedy performances, this stands head and shoulders above them all.
  • Best film of all time!
