Excellent heist movie with one of the best bad guys i've seen on screen in years. Robert Shaw's so cool and in total control. And Walter Matthau's delivery is pitch perfect. Great scrip, tight editing and a superb soundtrack make this a must see.

For me this film is way better than the 2009 remake starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta (which is still good !!) Classic retro 70's thriller.

This is a really good film. The acting is top notch and the story never gets boring. Definitely recommended.
  • See this before you watch the remake!

I saw this film when I was about 15 or 16. I was blown away by it at the time and always watch it if I see it being run on TV. It is a classic film, of that there is no doubt. I would seriously urge you to see this before you go to see the new one. I most certainly will watch the new one as well, just for comparison's sake.
  • This WILL be the better of the two Pelham 123's !

I agree with all the previous comments, but couldn't give it five stars; five stars should be reserved for timeless classics like 'Casablanca', 'Schindler's List', 'Citizen Kane', etc. Anyway, this is one of my favourite NY NY movies. Even though most of the action takes place underground, if you've been on the New York subway, you'll understand what I mean. Robert Shaw (Mr.Blue) is suitably cold & calculating as the gang leader hijacking the subway train named in the title, but Walter Matthau is great as the laconic Transit Authority Police Lieutenant, Zachary Garber, having to deal with the fast developing situation. There are some good supporting characters too, notably Martin Balsam (Mr.Green), and Jerry Stiller (as even more laid-back Lt. Rico Patrone). You can almost taste the Big Apple when watching this film. Enjoy ! N.B., Quentin Tarantino liked the film so much, he took the gang members names (all colours), and used them in 'Reservoir Dogs'! Also, the City Mayor character is considered by many to be a satirical swipe at politician Ed Koch, who would become New York Mayor for 11 years, four years after this film was made.
  • A true adaptation with the late great Robert Shaw

This film is an absolute classic, with fantastic acting from both Robert Shaw and Walter Matthau. Based on the book by John Godey, it is a film that is actually BASED on the book (unlike some modern adaptations which don't even resemble the book!) It is also the film that gave Quentin Tarantino the inspiration to name the characters in Reservoir Dogs. If you want to see this film, watch this version and not the 2009 re-make which is (as usual) nothing like the book or even the original film!!

I agree with the other reviewer - this is a wonderful film which is an absolute classic. So WHY have they remade the damn thing with Denzel Washington and John Travolta ? Why can't people leave well alone ? I urge anyone to see this film - in my opinion the new one cannot better it
