Description

A plane crash in the freezing Alaskan wilderness pits intellectual billionaire Charles Morse (Anthony Hopkins) against self-satisfied fashion photographer Robert Green (Alec Baldwin) in a brutal struggle for survival. Each soon discovers that the greatest danger resides not in nature, but from human fear, treachery, and quite possibly murder.

Great mix of impressive scenery (makes you relax) Riveting Terror (edge of your seat) Heroic Firm Principles (in Anthony Hopkins) and scope to imagine what will happen after the story's end. Fantastic evening's viewing.

It is clear the idea here is to make a movie like they used to in say the 1940's or 1950's. Real character-driven stuff. Although the film is 2 hours long, not enough time is given in the script to develop the characters so that they come across as somewhat two-dimensional. This is because every single line in the film is laden with too much weight, every glance by the characters is overburdened with 'meaning'. Everything said or done points to one end which as Elliot put it - 'is always present'. Characters need room to breath and display themselves in their complexity. The most disappointing line is the very last one, tearfully uttered by an anguished Hopkins... I have to say I was pretty anguished myself by this stage and not for the right reasons. I thought Baldwin was the outstanding acting performance and there was great technical direction from Tamahori, it was just a shame Mamet was not on form - watch House of Games (available here I believe) for a truly outstanding film script (and movie).

Has Anthony Hopkins ever been in a film where he hasn't been thoroughly convincing and utterly brilliant in the role he plays? Well if there is, it's not this one! Hugely underrated on it's release in the cinema, this movie has turned out to be one of AH's lesser known screen outings, which is a huge shame as it's an excellent adventure from start to finish. Stranded in the wilds of Alaska after a plane crash, mega rich Charles Morse and two of his closest associates have to battle the odds, weather, wildlife and each other to seek rescue. Beautifully shot on location with some jump out of your seat moments and plot twists, this film is unmissable. Enjoy!
