Where the hell is Keanu? That new guy and Sandra have no chemistry. This is such a dissapointment.

1994's Speed was a triumphant combination of a simple concept and gritty suspense. Taking a singular idea - what if a bus was rigged to blow up if it slowed down? - and building an edge-of-your-seat battle between a disillusioned ex-cop and do-or-die SWAT team hero around it, with the lives of a grab bag of LA residents as the ultimate prize; made the film a critical and commercial success, and thrust leading man Keanu Reeves into the limelight for the first time since Bill and Ted. But repeating the idea, albeit with a few changes - substitute ex-cop villain Hopper for computer designer baddie Defoe, and swap bus for boat - demonstrated that this time around the gripping plot and real sense of danger was lost in translation from land to sea. Defoe is a somewhat cartoonish villain, Miss Bullock exudes boredom with the role, Jason Patric is nothing more than just a talking prop shaped like a chisel-jawed personality vacuum. The main problem with the story is the departure from the original, grittier setting, to a softer, more family friendly approach. Strong violence and profanity do not necessarily a brilliant movie make, but the more sanitised Speed 2 is out of kilter with its predecessor, and so may not sit well with fans of the first film. All in all, this was an unnecessary sequel to a film which did not need a follow up to qualify its success. Best confined to the vaults tucked up next to such turkeys as Howard the Duck or The Avengers. Save your money, and not least because the £6.99 price tag is far too much.
