Description

Superstar George Clooney turns in a stellar performance in this thrilling sci-fi movie from Academy Award winners Steven Soderbergh and James Cameron. Aboard a lonely space station orbiting a mysterious planet, terrified crew members are experiencing a host of strange phenomena, including eerie visitors who seem all too human. And when psychologist Chris Kelvin (Clooney) arrives to investigate, he confronts a power beyond imagining that could hold the key to mankind's deepest dreams... or darkest nightmares.

  • Pointless remake

An unusual choice of film for a remake but falls into the no mans land between art house and mainstream failing to be neither. The original Film directed by possibly the greatest director of all time, Andrei Tarkovsky is a world cinema masterpiece and is a mind expanding experience by one of cinema's master filmakers. This new version by the always slightly overrated Soderberg is worthwhile as a stand alone film but you should really check out the Russian original.
  • Minor Masterpiece?

This is not an easy film. It was mis-marketed to appeal to standard sci-fi audiences. It is however a metaphysical, theological and psychological meditation, at times is almost mystically medieval in nature, placed in a sci-fi context. A futurist Divine Comedy perhaps. Those who wish to view it as a standard linear narrative sci-fi film will be very unsatisfied. Those who enjoy it should read the book by Lem to pick up the swathe of brilliantly handled philosophical and scientific themes presupposed and left implicit by the film and this will enable a highly rewarding second viewing. Of course, the film differs from the book in many places, yet the core theme is continued, although I think this comes across the more mystical. There is a growing online literature that is beginning to treat it with the respect it deserves, as does the original yet far more labour intensive Tarkovski. It is interesting that Clooney has sought out this role and that in the excellent Michael Clayton; both have strong epiphany themes.

One of my favourite movies off all time...love it love it love it...I would compare this to "Shame" with Fassbender, "Love" by William Eubank or Melancholia with Kirsten Dunst. Soderbergh at his best, excellent cinematography & sound track, made even better with blueray & an Arcam...seriously worth a look if you enjoy intelligent, well shot, beautiful films, there are far too few movies being made like this.

This film is a reflection of the insecurity we feel in life and how we grasp at ideas, people and things to give our own lives meaning. This being said it does not really cater for a American audience. It has a very European feel to it which makes for a nice change. Do not look for action here or you will be disappointed.

If all out action is your bag then stay clear. This film is all about atmosphere and subtlety
  • Best simulation of being a trapped chilie minor

I watched this movie a while back when it was released on one of the many movie channels, and I must say, it is one of the most boring frustrating and painful movies I have ever watched. The plot goes nowhere the charicters litterally run in circles and in some places I was even qeustioning what was even happening, or if it had acturally even happened; not because it was shocking but because the story was so poorly slapped together. If you really enjoy pain of wonder what it was like to be a chilie minor trapped in the mine for weeks upon weeks, with only the hope of escape to hold onto buy this movie, but otherwise avoid!
