Description

Based on the graphic novel by James Jones, The Thin Red Line tells the story of a group of men, an Army Rifle company called C-for-Charlie, who change, suffer, and ultimately make essential discoveries about themselves during the fierce World War II battle of Guadalcanal. It follows their journey, from the surprise of an unopposed landing, through the bloody and exhausting battles that follow, to the ultimate departure of those who survived. A powerful frontline cast - including Sean Penn, Nick Nolte, Woody Harrelson and George Clooney - explodes into action in this hauntingly realistic view of military and moral chaos in the Pacific during World War II.

Terrance Malick captures the raw nature of the human spirit in its most vulnerable and bravest forms. An exploration of humanity through the eyes of the soldiers on the vicious front line. Powerful perfomances by the large cast of actors complemented by Hans Zimmer's best orchestral soundtrack.

Such a beautiful film, fantastically shot, with subtle yet powerful performances. Very few films have as much soul as this.

I have to confess I started watching this and I was slightly disappointed but then I watched it from the start and I appreciated just how great it was. My only wish is a director's cut would be released. A beautiful film about war. Great acting, great action. great loactions. There's nothing poor about this film. Some may not like it as the action isn't as fast or as intense as say Black Hawk Down but it's not that kind of film.

I find this to be the best war film I have ever seen! I love it! It was always the film that introduced me to Jim Caviezel! Brilliant actor! I can't stress enough though that if you love this film from Itunes you have to get it on Blu Ray. Terrence Mallick the director has stated it was meant to be watched on Blu Ray and he was right! Just a superb film.

This is the finest war film ever made. Beautiful cinematography and superb performances all round. It's release at the same time as Saving Private Ryan has often left this somewhat commercially forgotten. It's different of course to Spielberg's film but this really taps in to the effects of war on a personal level and presents a remarkable picture of how war totally deconstructs a person mentally and physically. How this got overlooked at the oscars is beyond me - think it only won best cinematography. Malick, who I'm not a massive fan of otherwise, should have won best director and for nick nolte delivers his finest performance as well. It's not an easy watch, but if you want a true, un-hollywoodised depiction of war this is a must watch.

Wish I could buy this in HD but just like most films on iTunes you can only rent it. I do not understand this situation. I thought I could sell my blu ray player and go iTunes all the way but it just doesn't live up to the hype.

Yes, it's quite slow and evenly paced. The military action is too. Really it's a story about men's perception of reality. How we meditate on our circumstances and try to find meaning. There are flashbacks to an intimate relationship which offset the more gritty campaigning on Guadalcanal in WWII. Not so much a shocker as a relatively calm look at how we live our lives and face death. I would be willing to try another Malick film after this.
