Description

Steve McQueen delivers a powerful, gripping performance as a defiant loner whose skills as a soldier make him invaluable to his struggling platoon. In the heat of battle during World War II, McQueen and his fellow soldiers find themselves severely outnumbered as they hold off a Nazi advance along the Siegfried Line in France. Using only their ingenuity and bravery, they must bluff the Germans in order to buy some timeā€¦and save their lives. Don Siegel directs the explosive action led by an all-star cast, including Bobby Darin, Fess Parker, Harry Guardino, James Coburn, Nick Adams and Bob Newhart. If they can fool the enemy long enough for reinforcements to arrive, victory is theirs.

The companion piece to The War Lover (1962) when Steve McQueen returned to the big screen after The Magnificent Seven (1960) and just before The Great Escape (1963). Hell Is For Heroes is one of the most underrated pictures of McQueen's and Don Siegel's careers. if you are not a big McQueen fan, then you have probably never heard of this picture. One that deserves to be seen.

Hell Is For Heroes is a very well made war film and shows Steve McQueen in one of his best earlier roles. Also the fact that it is shot in black and white adds to the mood of the film. The only flaw of this film is that it could have had a bit more music to it.
