Description

Woody Allen returns to the romantic fields of previous hits Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Midnight in Paris, assembling an all-star cast also including Timothée Chalamet, Elle Fanning, Selena Gomez, Jude Law, Diego Luna and Liev Schreiber, for a charming, sizzling and comedic tale set amidst the fast-paced dizzying streets of The Big Apple. A RAINY DAY IN NEW YORK tells the story of college sweethearts, Gatsby (Chalamet) and Ashleigh (Fanning), whose plans for a romantic weekend together in New York City are dashed as quickly as the sunlight turns into showers. The two are soon parted, and through a series of chance meetings and comical adventures they will discover that, while you only live once, once is enough if you find the right person.

Chalamet, Fanning and Luna turn out beautiful performances. Cherry Jones steals the entire film. Typically rambling Allen again deploying complicated family relationships (falling for your ex’s sister, strained maternal relationship) as plot device but one can’t help but feel sentimental as the final scenes take us to Central Park and we wonder if this will be the last depiction of Allen’s NYC on celluloid.

I’m a fan of Woody Allen’s films but this one seemed to miss the mark a little. I felt that the two main actors didn’t quite deliver Woody’s words, but I’d put that down to the writing rather than the acting. Maybe his writing fits best with older leads. It’s the first time ever that I felt like Chalamet was acting, rather than owning a character. Still a good watch but not a classic.
  • Great film but ...

Chalamet is Woody Allen .... it’s like this was a film part meant for Woody Allen ... even his speech is similar in nature ....the theme is very Shakespearean romantic comedy , disjointed but yet coming together in the end and it does work well ...but there’s that sparkle that just doesn’t ignite and the film therefore doesn’t hit the heights it was aiming for ... still it was enjoyable and the music was great too
