Description

Tom Hanks portrays Mister Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, a timely story of kindness triumphing over cynicism, based on the true story of a real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and journalist Tom Junod. After a jaded magazine writer (Emmy winner Matthew Rhys) is assigned a profile of Fred Rogers, he overcomes his skepticism, learning about kindness, love and forgiveness from America’s most beloved neighbour.

  • Touching & Sentimental

A rather touching and sentimental film. I’d never heard of Fred Rogers before the movie but obviously his tv show affected a great many people back in the day, in the US. He’s not the principal character, but the main characters’ portrayal was affecting and true to life. How rarely do we see realistic portrayals of a grown man’s emotional life, even if this too includes violence. A sweet movie but not really what I was expecting, as it’s not a look at Fred Rogers life at all which probably is worth closer inspection. There’s something rather smarmy about Hank’s performance as Rogers, quite probably the real Rogers was genuine but Hanks can’t quite convey Rogers honesty.

This is an unusual film. Couldn't decide initially whether the Hollywood 'cheese' was too much but persevered and was really glad to have watched it. An inspiring film. The world would be a much better place if lives were lived by the values portrayed in this film. Living in UK had never heard of Mr Rodgers but good to know was based ona real person.

Well... You’re quite never disappointed with Tom Hanks. And here again, an interesting moving story about how kindness and understanding can change peoples lives. A feel good movie for a feel good evening.
  • Dull and pointless

Tom hanks is an amazing actor and I’ve enjoyed about everything he’s ever done. The premise of this film as intriguing and though it would be a great family film. The depressing family situation of the protagonist and the domestic violence was disturbing and detracted from the wholesome nature of the lead caricature and made the whole film unbalanced. It was not a family film for a drama but an odd mix with extremely weird miniature model scenes in it. Strange.
  • Good, but...

Tom Hanks is almost always outstanding. In this film he also shines, as does his co-actors. But, like others have commented, there is something odd about it. Maybe becuase I do not have an American background it am missing the connection? "Do unto others..." is anexcellent philosophy, but commercialising the concept into a heart string puller? Maybe not.

Very enjoyable movie. I felt like I was watching Fred Rogers, rather than Tom Hanks playing Rodgers

Mister Rogers wasn’t part of British broadcasting and so, ever since the documentary about him some years back titled Won’t You Be My Neighbour, I’ve learnt to appreciate his legacy. This film is very watchable because it’s not entirely about Rogers but how his influence affected those around him positively. Tom Hanks gives a beautiful performance and its perfectly contrasted by the sceptical journalist Matthew Rhys plays.

This is up there with As Good As It Gets, Groundhog Day and Green Book as one of my favourite movies. If you need cheering up, this is for you.
