Description

MIDWAY is the epic, real-life saga about an undermanned American fleet and the brave Navy leaders and pilots who triumphed, against the odds, over a powerful adversary. With democracy and freedom at stake, these U.S. brothers-in-arms conquered the Imperial Japanese Navy at the Battle of Midway, a most stunning clash by air and sea which marked a heroic feat of naval warfare and pivoted the Allies toward victory in the Pacific Theater during WWII.

A longtime passion project for director Roland Emmerich, this is an even-handed if very broad re-telling of one of the most important battles in World War 2 and in naval history. As a film it’s fine. A lot of effort has been made to adhere to the facts (some of which are crazier than you’d believe). Emmerich hasn’t lost his eye for pulling an audience into huge spectacles either, and the bombing of the Japanese fleet in particular is edge-of-your-seat stuff. The detailed (if bland) VFX look much richer in 4K too. But the the script is too broad with the facts to be really interesting, and the humans are not drawn with enough detail, so the film doesn’t offer any fresh insight into this amazing story.

Get past the special effects which ill be honest couldn’t look more “green screened” if they tried.......really really weak tv play acting and this is a really poor movie...I’d actually rather sit and watch pearl harbour again. Soo pleased this was free on amazon prime as it literally got two attempts from me and I did not get past 20 minutes either time. Absolute PAP.

High brow dicks saying it’s terrible. Great action packed movie. Better than the romantic crap in Pearl Harbour.

Great movie highly recommend as watched at cinema and now have to keep and watch on 🍏TV. Not sure why so many bad reviews, yes there are a few ropey plane scenes of CGI such a great film of pilots committing their lives. Great story and history of events on the gruesome attack of Pearl Harbour!
  • An OK film

Not something that will be remembered in a year or two despite its very strong subject. I believe the old midway film will still be the one people remember. I did however like the end credits when they updated us on what happened to the real characters. Too much poor acting for my liking. Two of the top stars putting on American accents, one English and one welsh? I’m sure the USA have decent enough actors for this level of film. It was ok in places but very glad I rented it at the discount price.

Not the best movie out there in terms of war movies, but it’s entertaining nonetheless.

Whereas I would fully agree that some of the acting is corny and maybe over melodramatic (the US side specifically, the Japanese side is more than acceptable), the film does get cross the importance of this great US victory particularly at a time when Japan was considered by its adversaries to be unbeatable. Another review has described the computer graphic imagery (CGI) as 'terrible' with which also do not agree as requires very little additional imagination to comprehend what the fighting conditions were like (one can only assume that person's expectations are set not at a realistic level particularly when it would not have been possible to recreate such a battle with original equipment). Hey ho you can't please very one!
