Description

Jack Malik was just another struggling songwriter...but that was yesterday. After a mysterious blackout, Jack (Himesh Patel) discovers he is the only person on earth who remembers The Beatles! As he rockets to fame by passing off the Fab Four’s songs as his own, Jack risks losing Ellie (Lily James) – the one person who has loved him and believed in him from the start. Before the door to his old life closes forever, Jack must decide if all he needs is love, after all. Kate McKinnon and Ed Sheeran also star in this romantic rock ‘n’ roll comedy from Academy Award®-winning director Danny Boyle and Academy Award®-nominated screenwriter Richard Curtis.

It’s one of them movies which takes ages to start and doesn’t ever seem to get better.
  • Poor story writing/ poor ending

I was led to believe this would be a “it all happened in a dream” movie, which would worked, instead the world except a few people mysteriously forget the Beatles and Coca Cola, which doesn’t make any sense, making it a mystery movie, when it needs and wants to be a rom-com drama. No resolution at the end and poor cameos by Beatles members.

Started really well, but they didn’t know where to go with the idea. At least the songs are great, as expected :)

The whole film felt so hollow and nothing gripped me about it at all. The story lines were weak, the acting was painful, and the jokes were lost.

  • Best thing about it was remembering how good the Beatles were

Watched it yesterday no pun intended and I desperately wanted to like it and it was okay but nothing special, and I think I laughed maybe once or twice so if it’s a comedy then it failed, and as my title suggested, it has made me realise and appreciate what an outstanding and talented band the Beatles were
  • Did I mention James Cordon?

Saccharine nonsense that doesn't even make sense according to its own logic. None of the lead characters seem to have understood the tone of the film, and there's Ed Sheeran, bless him, trying his hand at a significant role. At one point a part of the plot development relies on us believing Sheeran is the best songwriter in the world. Yes, you read that right. Not to mention that all female characters are simply doting robots, loving Jack for some inexplicable reason, the rest are lazy stereotypes. At no point is Jack anything other than a sullen and sub-par songwriter, who takes himself far too seriously - and not in some sort of charming, deadpan way. There's a major misstep towards the end, but that's spoiler territory. All I can say it's in thunkingly poor taste. Unsurprising, I suppose, from a film that thinks James Cordon is funny. No long and winding road in sight; if you're a Beatles fan this is more like a motorway of lazy tropes headed at breakneck speed to dissapointment
