Description

Six years ago NASA discovered the possibility of alien life within our solar system. A probe was launched to collect samples, but crashed upon re-entry over Central America. Soon after, new life forms began to appear and half of Mexico was quarantined as an infected zone. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain "the creatures"... A US journalist agrees to escort a shaken American tourist through the infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the US border.

Monsters is beautifully realised science fiction that’s more of a reflective road movie than crass blockbuster. The improvised performances are nuanced and sympathetic, the score is excellent and the director’s self rendered effects are astonishingly realistic for a budget of only $500,000. The film’s political foresight is almost prophetic when viewed in 2018. If you watch carefully, you’ll notice how the ending links directly onto the beginning. Those with eagle eyes will be devastated. Monsters has great rewatch value and will stay with you.

This is not the movie the trailer shows. This is not a horror movie, it's not an action movie, it's not a disaster movie. It's an incredibly personal and beautiful and moving journey, quite literally, from A to B. It is a learning experience for the characters, and through that for you. It makes commentary on a number of things, and it's qute a political movie in many regards, but it's first and foremost a gorgeous exploration of the world the characters inhabit and their journey through it.
