Description

With A Ghost Story, acclaimed director David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Pete’s Dragon) returns with a singular exploration of legacy, loss, and the essential human longing for meaning and connection. Recently deceased, a white-sheeted ghost(Academy Award-winner Casey Affleck) returns to his suburban home to console his bereft wife (Academy Award-nominee Rooney Mara), only to find that in his spectral state he has become unstuck in time, forced to watch passively as the life he knew and the woman he loves slowly slip away. Increasingly unmoored, the ghost embarks on a cosmic journey through memory and history, confronting life’s ineffable questions and the enormity of existence. An unforgettable meditation on love and grief, A Ghost Story emerges ecstatic and surreal—a wholly-unique experience that lingers long after the credits roll.

A beautiful and brave movie.....gets under your skin and stays there. Clearly not intended for those of a limited attention span/iq so ignore the low level dismissive nonsense from such
  • No other film like it.

This is a once in a life time, incredibly special film. I cannot gurantee you will like it, it's a slow movie and it's not always easy to grasp what it's trying to tell you, but I think if you stick with it, you will gain a very sincere appreciation for it's mastery of the visual art. This is the first movie I can think of that has made me cry with no sound or dialogue at all. Just the visuals on screen, and the emotions of the characters, even when one is wearing a big sheet on his head.

Lovely soundtrack to this simple but beautiful story of love and loss.

You're either going to get this film or you won't. If you don't, you're going, in all likelihood, to criticise it. If you do get it, however, you're probably going to rave about it. I definitely get it. It's incredibly sad and moving until the very last moment of the film when a connection to joy is made. It isn't a conceit to use a blanket with eyes to represent the spirit - it works really well to evoke the formless, shifting nature of a spiritual being without flesh. What I get is that the film tries to give us a view of time and the world through the perspective of a spirit, and it mostly manages to do that (as far as anyone can know, of course). A lot of it is performed in silence but with an ethereal, stunning score underpinning every moment. The scene with the pie so often sneered at, because it lasts a long time, actually serves to present to the viewer how compulsive we can be in grief, how focused in on inane activities, and how we can end up becoming aware of what we're doing and then be revolted by it. I think if you've experienced grief and permanent loss, you'll likely feel a strong connection to this film but it can be unsettling and stir the soul up.

So boring and slow. One point, watched woman eating pie for 12 minutes. Fell asleep halfway. Avoid unless you want to watch film with mostly silence and not much dialogue.

This ‘Arty’ movie has to be the dullest film ever made. Every single scene drawn out for far too long, I thought the director forgot to say cut. One scene watching the actress eat a pie for 10 minutes. Wasted a Sunday afternoon to watch this rubbish. I don’t understand how people enjoyed this. Might as well be a silent movie. I love low budget story driven scripts but this film actually made me angry watching it. Save your money and go and watch a puddle evaporate instead.

It’s slow and takes its time. But mesmerising wonderful and makes you think about existence etc.
