Description

1783. Bruised and battered from a costly war with America, England is in the grip of a recession. Nowhere is harder hit than Cornwall, where the jobs and financial rewards of yesteryear have all but dried up. Only the bankers seem to be making any money as debts rise and mines close. Ross Poldark is horrified to return home to find his beloved country as broken as his own heart. In Ross's absence, his childhood sweetheart has married his cousin and best friend. Feeling betrayed by everything he loves - his family, his friends, his country - Ross decides to reopen his mine and provide jobs for the people of Cornwall. Breaking down class barriers in his attempts to build a new life, Ross will find new love but it will also cost him dearly.

  • A Really Strong Show

The one thing that struck me is the pacing is faster than I'm used to but that works perfectly for this show. The acting was superb - much better than I had expected. Aidan Turner manages to keep his character serious whilst still endearing the audience to him and cracking the occasional smile. Eleanor Tomlinson was a great find! She handles Demelza's transition from Maid to Gentlewoman seamlessly, and it's weirdly perfect to have the love interest provide possibly the most comic relief out of the entire cast. The characters are all well-defined without being 2 dimensional. This show captures the perfect balance of everything; it's truthful yet dramatic, picturesque yet real, both funny and heartbreaking, and I honestly can't find a way to fault it.

It's actually disgusting how long it takes to download this, why should I pay money for this and wait all this time when I can just watch them on a website for free and not have to wait at all!

I was a young girl when the original series came out. This is more pc in many ways. aiden turner is more accepting of the "lower classes" where the original series made a far stronger distinction and he struggled with his marriage to a servant. he did not marry her for love, but for honour when she got pregnant. that said, this is a very enjoyable production with wonderful sets and acting and i think the two stars are fantastic.

Best tv programme I have ever watched. A bit of a rip off though for £2.50!!! I think Eleanor Tomlinson is the best actress and plays the part extremly well. Adrian turner is really good as he also is in the hobbit and the hobbit was beyond epic. A bit disappointed that there will be another series because this ought to mean a stupid cliff hanger again. This means its going to drag and the only reason they are doing it is because the want a bit more cash. (greedy ******** lol) I think Eleanor is going to be a film star because of this as it will promote her a lot. This part asked a lot from her and she was successful enough to perform it to its standards.Thank you for reading ( professional TV programme critic) I suggest you turn out your pockets and buy all of these as they a purely epic.

There have been many period dramas, but this one in particular stands out and is one of the best i have ever seen. With really good actors, that portray the roles really well. Also, good shooting and of course its in cornwall! Amazing scenery!

Was a bit worried when I heard BBC were doing 'Poldark' again. I was so disappointed with the series in the late 1970s as although the actors were fantastic, the fact that the BBC veered wildly of course with the script versus the novels was a complete mystery . I have read & re-read the novels since I was 15 and I am delighted that this series keeps incredibly close to the orginal. I am so pleased with this adaptation and now look forward to each episode. This is a definite 5 star rating from a a Poldark novel nerd.
