Description

From Damon Lindelof, co-creator of the hit series Lost, this one-hour drama focuses on a suburban town whose preconceptions are shattered in the wake of a global event dubbed “The Departure” (which may or may not have been the Biblical “rapture”), in which some people were taken and others left behind. Based on the bestselling 2011 novel by Tom Perrotta, the series focuses on denizens of the fictional town of Mapleton, three years after the fateful October 14 day when 140 million people – 2% of the world’s population – disappeared without a trace. Seen primarily through the eyes of beleaguered police chief Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux – Mulholland Drive) and his family, the series shows how ordinary people react to inexplicable events that can unite or divide families and communities, revealing how the strain of an unprecedented calamity can turn people’s faith into cynicism, paranoia, madness, or cult-like fanaticism.

My wife and I put this on a SKY+ recording as the trailer looked interesting. We started watching a few weeks in. I can honestly say that I have never seen a TV show which has taken me on such an emotional ride as 'the leftovers'. We were glued from the moment we watched the first episode. I cannot recommend it highly enough; definitely one of the best TV shows I have ever seen.
  • Lost was rubbish. This is good.

Lost was one of the worst TV programmes ever conceived. Convoluted, pretentious and lacking in any intelligence, it sucked, pure and simple. This is far better. Subtle, mysterious and excellently acted, it clearly benefits from an intriguing initial plot device yet is actually about the fallout from that event rather than the event itself. In exploring the effects an unexplainable cataclysmic event has on people, The Leftovers is an exercise in desperation and grief. Far better than the turgid mess that was Lost.

The first few episodes are a bit shaky, but once The Leftovers grows into it's own, it is one of the most captivating shows I have ever seen. Relying on characters more than plot, it certainly has a "Lost" vibe to it, only we have already been told that there will be no explanation, because that is the whole point of the show. Acting and score are superb. Only slight issue is that it can be awfully heavy, and some not very pleasant scenes really damage the episodes (one in particular scene in "Gladys"), but once you reach the finale, they pay off is tremendous.
