Description

A brilliant surgeon pushes the boundaries of medicine, morality and race relations at a New York City hospital at the turn of the 20th century in Season 1 of this Cinemax drama series. Throughout 10 episodes--all directed by filmmaker Steven Soderbergh--the show follows Dr. John Thackery (Oscar(R)-nominee Clive Owen) and his groundbreaking work at the Knickerbocker Hospital (a.k.a. "The Knick") which faces a major upheaval due to an exodus of affluent patrons, an infusion of poor patients, and gross mismanagement of its finances. As he searches to solve a plethora of medical mysteries and develops a cocaine habit, Thackery must deal with a variety of co-workers and patients, including driven new arrival, Dr. Algernon Edwards (Andre Holland) and the wealthy and influential Cornelia Robertson (Juliet Rylance). Also with Eric Johnson, Michael Angarano, Eve Hewson, Cara Seymour, Jeremy Bobb and Chris Sullivan.

  • Entertaining period drama

This is an interesting insight into not just how crude medical science was around 1900, but also how racist attitudes were still extremely commonplace. The show is well produced and looks great (as you would expect from director Steven Soderberg), with some very graphic scenes of medical procedures and diseases as well as excellent set design and lighting. A few downsides though - Clive Owen's attempt at an American accent is truly terrible, and the music used throughout the show is incredibly ill fitting and downright bizarre.
  • Dark, gritty hospital drama

Clive Owen is excellent in this period hospital drama. The series offers a brutal insight into the butchery of turn-of-the-century operating theatres and the surgeons who pioneered new techniques. Great script, good acting, odd music...

Let’s start with the positive points: great acting, relatively convincing period drama with attention to details. Now… I think we are all a bit tired of hospital related shows and period dramas. This is a 1900’s version of House MD. The lead character is also a deeply flawed genius, lacking social skills, also with an addiction problem.
