River Monsters, Series 4

River Monsters is one of our favourite shows as a family, but I have grown tired of having to explain spirit possession to my children so many times. In the earlier series Jeremy sometimes branched off into amateur anthropology, to explain the beliefs of local people about the rivers and the river monsters. In series three, and even more so in series four, he appears to go out of his way, in virtually every episode, to propitiate local deities. I object to having this religious worldview rammed down my throat, and I tire of explaining it to my kids. They love Jeremy, but these recent episodes have made them confused. Jeremy's own confusion is revealed in his oft-repeated phrase, "I'm a scientist, but…" So come on Jeremy, please get back to the fishing--you and the show are entertaining enough without the need for all the dark pagan angst you have been giving us lately.
