Description

A fascinatingly comic trawl through the darker recesses of the human psyche, this series of spoof documentaries, penned by Rob Brydon and Julia Davis, is an engrossing account of six very different couples. Each gives frank, open, and more often than not, disturbing interviews in this deeply absorbing, funny and warped view of dysfunctional human relationships.

Both punishingly depressing and extremely funny, the characters are not just grotesques, but are played with a tenderness which cuts across their broken, imprisoned lives.

I have loved this series for years and so glad iTunes have now made it available. Genius characters wonderfully played.
  • One of the best comedy series ever made....

A true classic that never gained the wider acclaim and ratings it deserved. Each episode (in the then popular mockumentary format - this was a near contemporary of The Office) focuses on a different couple and setting, allowing (the then fairly new to TV) Brydon and Davis duo to create some truly grotesque but unbelievably funny characters and scenarios. The humour often falls on the darker side of life and to me there's an underlying sadness to some of the characters - in many episodes its clear that these couples' relationships are failing / underpinned by lies and self delusion... but in the funniest possible way. The episodes vary a little depending on your comedy taste but 'All over my Glasses', 'Straight as a flute' and (the particularly dark) 'More than happy' are in my opinion, some of the best comedy scripts and performances of the last 20 years. A must for fans of Brydon and Davis or for those that enjoyed shows like Marion & Geoff, Nighty Night and Alan Partidge. This is a series I've come back to time and time again and its gets funnier with every viewing.

Best thing either of these two have done. Bears repeat viewings. Haunting, perfectly observed and very, very funny. Fantastic stuff.
