Description

This landmark series explores the sheer scale and majesty of the largest ocean on Earth, the isolation of its islands, the extraordinary journeys wildlife and humans have gone through to reach these specks of land, and what happened to both after their arrival. Unimaginably vast, the Pacific is 99% water and only 1% land — you could fit the whole of the world's landmasses into it and still have enough room for another Africa! The distance between these islands can be huge — literally hundreds or thousands of miles — but somehow, life made it there. Isolation does curious things — animals evolve and adapt in strange ways. Witness flesh-eating caterpillars, giant crabs capable of opening coconuts, geckos that can breed without any need of a male, frogs that have never been tadpoles... Beyond cliched images of swaying palms and idyllic beaches, this is the real, immense and surprising South Pacific.

I purchased the HD version and have not been disappointed. The photography is stunning and kudos has to go to the photographers for their patience in filming some of the rarest species on the planet, some that have never been filmed before. The only reason why this is a 4 and not 5 star is some of the film and narrative is repeated in more than one episode, don't get me wrong, it's good to watch it again! I do think it is priced quite well against some of the other nature programs out there.

this series combines visual eye candy of the high quality with breathtaking natural events. the subject matter may be a bit 'pick n mix' or disparate but the cinematography makes it worth buying to watch again. the series so far looks to be painting a wonderful picture of this massive body of water and its inhabitants, highly recommended, especially with HD.

This series looks like it was what HDTV was made for! It is beautifully filmed and also very interesting. The quality in HD is absolutely stunning, especially the closing part of episode 1. Highly recommended, especially for those with Full HD or high spec PCs to completely appreciate the quality of the cinematography. (Check the HD notes to make sure you can play in HD on your equipment before purchasing the HD version)
