A combination of implausible scenarios, exaggerated melodrama and a liberal dose of wackiness, Soap – a parody of the TV soap opera genre – was both popular and critically acclaimed following its debut in 1977. Surprises and shenanigans are part of everyday life for sisters Jessica and Mary and their offbeat, scandal-rich families – the Tates and the Campbells. The well-to-do Tates are Chester – who has a wandering eye; Jessica – who has a wandering mind; and their kids Corinne, Eunice and Billy – the only sane one – according to sarcastic butler, Benson. The Campbells are Burt, Mary and her sons: the dim-witted Danny and openly gay Jodie (Billy Crystal). As the plots unravel, so do the family members in true, sudsy soap-style.
