    Despite a lot of good points, this feels like a three or four parter that's been strung out to satisfy the need for a much longer format, and it suffers for that. Setting the scene is fine, but this goes too far for too long and is only teeing us up for the next series while nothing really happens in this one. It's all perfectly watchable and true to the time, but the writing is slubby and while it looks good, ultimately, you're left feeling both unsatisfied and strangely underwhelmed.

    Up there with Sopranos, The Wire, Boardwalk Empire and True Detective in a long line of seminal, provocative, gritty dramas that slowly lure you in and leave you gagging for more. Gyllenhaal and Franco are both amazing and the supporting cast are one of the best on TV today. Everything clicks - the music, the dialogue, the acting... This is going to win awards. A+
