Description

'Northern Soul' is the story of a youth culture in the 1970's, which changed a generation. No longer satisfied with the prospect of a small town life and a factory production line, two young boys dream of going to America to discover rare records which will help them become the best DJ's on the scene. This journey forces them to confront rivalry, violence and drug abuse and their friendship is tested to the limit. This is Northern Soul.

Loved the film , it is what it is and all the better for that. it’s a Northern thing and all the negative comments must be from shandy drinking southerners 😆. Filmed in King George’s Hall BLACKBURN and made to look like Wigan Casino . I think it’s true to the times and I’m 55 .

I gave the film 3 stars for the music,do not waste your money on the film,If you are into northern soul buy the sound track but any respectable soul fan will have these tunes either on cd,vinal etc, I am so glad i never went to wigan if it was like that the wheel ,cats, and the torch were great. The acting is wooden, suprised well known actors were in invovled, the plot terrible,in fact i am embarressed to say i love northern soul after this,

While it may not be the most original story, echoing a number of similar “rites of passage” buddies growing up together films, What carries this, is firstly, the wonderful detail, which recreates the period of 1970’s northern England with an almost disturbing accuracy. And secondly, the music, which is the real star of the show. Make no mistaker, the music is absolutely cracking. It’s worth a watch for this alone. The acting is unlikely to win any Oscars, however it's far from being as wooden as some reviewers have suggested. All in all it is far superior to the majority of dross that passes for cinema these days.

Very very very disappointing this. I am so glad I rented it and didn’t buy it. Nothing like the times I remembered at all and I went to Wigan Casino more than 20 times. ……The story line was inane and the script not much better. Key people of the time missing and no grasp of the real mood despite really poor attempts to do so. Bad casting played a major role. …..Need I go on

I have been looking forward to this film for weeks Great music but very poor storyline. Watched it to the bitter end in the hope that there was a clever twist but the more I watched the more clichéd it became

Was looking forward to watching this film as it had good reviews. But it’s really one for the Northern Soul devotees. Perhaps you had to be there. For the rest of us, the plot is thin and rather cliched, and the acting is average. The music and styling obviously shows an attention to detail and love of the time/place, but it doesn’t carry a pretty mediocre film.

This is a standard formula "Right of Passage" plot dressed up in a Northern Soul cloak. Spoiler alert... Young, shy loner meets confident, older mentor. The mentor goes to the dogs while the youngster blossoms. Sound familiar? The northern soul setting does help.

I’ve been waiting months for this film to come out. The director attention to detail - set, costume, background is a revelation and the music….well the music is what this film is all about. It takes a little while but when it does, BANG! Lots of well know Northern Soul classics plus a few I’ve not heard of either. Watch this, buy the album and bob’s yer uncle. I bloody loved it.
