Description

Camden Town, the end of the sixties. Two struggling, unemployed actors decide some respite is in order and so depart their miserable flat for a week in the Lake District - one that will involve rain, booze, minimal supplies, a randy bull and an even randier Uncle Monty. Based on the real-life experiences of former actor turned writer/director Bruce Robinson, Withnail & I has become one of British cinema's most fondly-remembered comedies. A cult film in the truest sense that has also become a classic. Perfectly cast - with career-defining roles for Richard E. Grant, Paul McGann, Richard Griffiths and Ralph Brown - and crammed with irresistibly quotable dialogue, Withnail & I is a sheer delight, even on the umpteenth viewing.

I know its regarded as as UK cult classic but most if not all of the characters are deeply unpleasant, its really not very funny and the only good scene in it is the tragic and affecting last one. Watch it for fun but dont fool yourself its great cinema.

I watched this with my teenage kids. They loved it so much they bought the screenplay before it had finished.
  • Overrated.

I rented this film tonight as it’s been hyped for many years and I've never got around to watching it. Boy am I glad it was just a rental. With the exception of Paul McGann the acting’s terrible and there’s no real purpose to it. I like homegrown British films but this was just dire. ...trying to push a chicken in a kettle was the only bit that made me laugh.

This is the cult film of all cult films this film invented the term cult. Yes its full of funny one liners and Camberwell Carrots and just a few ales lines but if that’s all you see then your missing the point that it’s about that time in everyone’s lives when you think your an adult and your not, when you can throw yourself into anything you want to and just enjoy life for what it is and can be. The lovely thing about this film is the relationship between Withnail and I and how one goes on to become a more successful adult and the other stays where he is which is somewhere between off his head or desperately unhappy looking for his next kick out of life.

Worth watching for the Camberwell Carrot alone, a film filled with glorious lines, wonderful innocence and a refreshing cynicism. Unmissable.

Stands like a colossus amongst mere mortal films. Amongst a certain generation of people of a certain bent this film is rightly held up as a gospel. Without question the finest work of everybody involved. People are, of course, entitled to their own opinion but anyone who doesn't appreciate this film is frankly an idiot.
  • the greatest cult classic.

"Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day, and for once I'm inclined to believe Withnail is right. We are indeed drifting into the arena of the unwell. Making enemies of our own futures.”

I shall be eternally disappointed at having to suffer the death, that I shall never be able to see the beauty of this film ... Again.
