Description

Police officers Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal, Source Code) and Zavala (Michael Peña, Crash [2004]) are partners and best friends. A night-school student in film production, Taylor affixes tiny cameras to his and Zavala’s uniforms to record their daily routines, collecting material for a short video about the real lives of the LAPD. Life is good - until a seemingly routine vehicle check finds the pair stepping on the toes of powerful drug traffickers.

  • Unpretentious, believable story…superb acting

Has a documentary feel…superbly acted…am easily bored with films and leave many halfway through…but not this one…its been advertised as two cops tagged by a deadly gang…this comes only at the very end…don’t let this anticipation ruin rest of story…enjoy all the film…unpretentious and feels very real…!

It's actually a really bad idea to review films you didn't finish, unless you didn't finish it because you just couldn't take any more. I got over an hour in. Lots of little 'everyday life' stuff until I wanted to sceam. Maybe it is like Wolf Creek (which I wish I'd walked out of, as several people in the cinema did) and exciting stuff happens at the end but, also like Wolf Creek, whatever happens, it won't be worth the wait. I really can't bear to finish it. If you like docudrama and 'small moving moments of reality' you'll do better than I did. If you like clever thrillers, seriously start about an hour in, you won't miss anything.

ignore the review above. this film is up there with the great cop films. it is a film that is surprising, moving and occasionally, genuinely amusing. the cinematography may feel overcooked in the first few minutes, but it does bring something new to (faux) cinéma vérité. the distractions that sometimes accompany the handheld aesthetic soon fade and become an intrinsic part of the tautly revealed story and engaging characters.
