Description

Set in Los Angeles, in the near future, “Her” follows Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), a complex, soulful man who makes his living writing touching, personal letters for other people. Heartbroken after the end of a long relationship, he becomes intrigued with a new, advanced operating system, which promises to be an intuitive and unique entity in its own right. Upon initiating it, he is delighted to meet “Samantha,” a bright, female voice (Scarlett Johansson) who is insightful, sensitive and surprisingly funny. As her needs and desires grow, in tandem with his own, their friendship deepens into an eventual love for each other. From the singular perspective of Oscar®-nominated filmmaker Spike Jonze comes “Her,” an original love story that explores the evolving nature—and the risks—of intimacy in the modern world. Written and directed by Jonze, the romantic drama stars Oscar® nominees Joaquin Phoenix (“The Master,” “Walk the Line”), Amy Adams (“The Master,” “Doubt”) and Rooney Mara (“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”); Olivia Wilde (upcoming “Rush”); and Scarlett Johansson (“Lost in Translation”).

  • Not for me

I found the proposition too challenging and the idea of a robot with emotions and reactions like a human was just too far for me. Consequently I could not get into it and found it tedious and long-winded.

I loved this. What I loved about it was the fact that it’s scarily close to our very near future. Our reliance on technology our fake connections to a machine or a product. Our de humanisation is in full swing now..... But we blissfully ignore it.

Interesting concept. Worth a watch if nothing else catches your eye but I wont be watching this a second time.

The movie is well made and has interesting concepts within the story line; however, i found it too long and very repetitive.

Cringe making dialogue. Perhaps dating is a cultural thing, but the computer's learning 'pain' was not believable or deep enough. The idea was good but poorly executed. The guy,s alienation is valid only when measured against an AI. Well if that,s the future. Best read it than watch it.

This is a great film, extremely sad and artistic. Explores the ideas of loneliness and real love.

A sad but also life affirming and mesmerising. A fabulous performance by Joaquín Phoenix and Scarlett Yohansen combined with moments that every human can empathise with make this a truly memorable movie. The cinematography is outstanding and the music is so apt. This film goes straight into my top 5!
  • The longest long distance relationship

I currently have a long distance relationship and this film in so many ways reminded me of the difficulties we have to make it work, to not succumb to loneliness . Communication has to be often and honest. This film is not fast paced, so have little wine to hand, and make yourself comfortable and enjoy the uniqueness of the storyline. I had to in-wardly smile at the ending, this happens so much in real life. (don’t want to say as it is plot spoiler). Joaquin remind me in many ways of a friend from way back and Scarlett reminded me of my current love. Her sexy voice to Samantha is one of the cogs that make this film special. As many others say the cinematography and music score are excellent.

For me, it was a practically perfect film. I can fully understand why others might not like it, but the direction, casting and tech on display highlighted just where we are going in our addiction to technology. A miraculous film.
