Description

It’s not human. Yet. From the producers of Dawn of the Dead comes the chilling prelude to John Carpenter’s cult classic film. When paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) travels to an isolated outpost in Antarctica for the expedition of a lifetime, she joins an international team that unearths a remarkable discovery. Their elation quickly turns to fear as they realize that their experiment has freed a mysterious being from its frozen prison. Paranoia spreads like an epidemic as a creature that can mimic anything it touches will pit human against human as it tries to survive and flourish in this spine-tingling thriller.

  • Feels like an enjoyable tribute to John Carpenter’s The Thing

I absolutely love John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982), so when I learned a prequel was going to be made, I admittedly had a mini geekgasm. Whilst the end result is definitely no match for Carpenter’s classic, it is very enjoyable. Mostly retreading the same plot was never going to earn the prequel rave reviews, but it satisfyingly fleshes out some backstory and delivers some genuine scares. The cast are all great and thankfully, not trying to replicate the same group dynamic as Kurt Russell and Co. The close recreation of Carpenter’s world - especially the Norwegian camp - will definitely please fans. The picture quality is ok for HD. Obviously 4K would be great, but I understand Universal wouldn’t view this as a priority title. I would genuinely love to see some extras included at some point though. This title is now re-listed, so whilst my digital purchase is still available for me to stream/download, I can no longer access it via Siri or the search bar, etc. Please Apple; if a studio decides to re-release their titles and delete older versions, can you make it easier for us to find our obsolete purchases? Asking on behalf of a few million customers! 😉
