Description

9.79* tells the fascinating story of the controversial 100 metre race at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, where the scandalous tale of illegal substance abuse changed the world of athletics forever. Canadian Ben Johnson and the USA’s Carl Lewis had one of the greatest sporting rivalries of the 20th century, and their competition led to one of the most dramatic moments in Olympic history as Johnson took the gold medal but just hours later was stripped of his win after organisers announced he had tested positive for banned substances. For the first time, all eight 100m athletes and a number of other contemporaries reconstruct the race and the climate of the times - a fascinating period where steroid abuse became an open secret amongst athletes. With drug testing in its infancy and only performed at times of competition some athletes played roulette as they sought to maximise their performance without detection. Those who chose not to partake looked on in frustration as the playing field became increasingly uneven.

I saw this race on TV back in 1988, then heard and read bits of info. However this documentary is very insightful and unravels much of what happened bit by bit. I am now reading more as a result. Highly recommended.

The film builds up to what happened in Seoul- and then attempts to drop a conspiracy bomb just when you think you understand what was going on. The film works well as it provokes questions- because I'd read around the topic before though, I wanted answers. Well worth watching; especially as you can't help wondering which group of athletes will provide a sequel!!

Great documentary. The film seems to reflect more fairly, what appeared to be happening at the time. Ben Johnson is portrayed as a cheat but more realistically as a cheat among cheats. Carl Lewis and his manager portray themselves, probably unknowingly, as arrogant rich people who "got away with it". That race still has to be the most impressive 100m race ever!

I never knew the real story of the 'dopin'g incident but a freind recommended this film. The runners are very frank in 'owning up' (I'll say no more) but certainly worth a watch and just the right duration too!

But not up to date. Carl Lewis did test positive 3 times but nothing much on this!
