Description

Doug Roberts, architect, returns from a long vacation to find work nearly completed on his skyscraper. He goes to the party that night concerned he's found that his wiring specifications have not been followed and that the building continues to develop short circuits. When the fire begins, Michael O'Hallorhan is the chief on duty as a series of daring rescues punctuate the terror as a building too tall to have a fire successfully fought from the ground burns.

Depends how close the fire was to the hand rail? Don’t be so bloody pedantic! This is a great film which I saw for the first time in the cinema when I was 15. I am now 56 and still rate it very highly! Don’t be so critical.! No film is perfect; nor am I, or are you!!!

There is no doubt about it this is a great disaster movie. The problem is there are several scenes which spoil the overall film. Such as climbing down a metal hand rail with flames all around but no hand covering. Doesn't metal get extremely hot? There are many other instances which, for me, reduce this from 5 stars to 4. It is still a great movie with an inspired cast of actors.

One of the greatest disaster pictures ever filmed featuring an all-star cast headed by Steve McQueen and Paul Newman. Nominated for Best Picture, alongside The Godfather Part II (1974), The Towering Inferno is an enduring classic that features fantastic performances from all cast members. Superb cinematography and special effects, this is a major blockbuster in the same category as Earthquake (1974) and The High And The Mighty (1954). Classic with a capital 'K'.
