Description

American Mary follows broke student Mary Mason who grows disenchanted with medical school and the doctors she once idolized. The allure of easy money sends a desperate Mary to the underground world of body modification surgery, but soon finds that her choices leave more marks on herself than her so-called freakish clientele...Smart, sexy, funny and utterly gorgeous to look at, American Mary features a stand-out lead performance from horror icon Katharine Isabelle and puts the Soska Sisters firmly at the forefront of modern horror filmmaking.

Original. Funny. Surgically constructed. Best North American horror since Stake Land. The twins have pulled off a well written, memorable wee cult classic.
  • A unique topic that leaves you wanting more

I am dubious to place this movie in the horror genre. Although it is peppered with visual scenes that may be regarded as gruesome (they all have a surgical theme), I find that his movie would be better classified as a thriller. The acting is not first rate. However, the Soska sisters teasingly hint at various story lines specific to the characters but do not explore them deep enough leaving the audience wanting to learn more. The overall movie is an artistic creation that touches upon the philosophical ideas of what society deems "normal" and how people view themselves. Some humour creeps into the movie though this is more of a macabre nature. This movie reminds me of "American Psycho" and the debate it tries to ignite about society as a whole and the individuals that make it up. I would recommend watching this movie though do not anticipate that you will be jumping out of your seat with fear. Rather, you will find yourself exploring the themes touched upon and extrapolating them to the world around.

Confused by all the praise. No plot, terrible acting and extremely dull.
  • Not an entirely successful operation.

I really enjoyed this film, it is witty, stylish and has a fresh and idiosyncratic perspective. It has the good grace to reference one of its more obvious influences, Cronenberg's Dead Ringers. It is a shame therefore that having set up a compelling and original character in Mary Mason, medical student/ moonlighting body modding surgeon, it is unable to maintain its initial drive and meanders aimlessly in the final act to a disappointing conclusion. Still, at its best, it is head and shoulders above most of the predicatable, formulaic and exploitational dross that passes for horror these days

This film is the second best horror film I've ever seen ( the first being evil dead ) it has an amazing twisted storyline which makes you feel for the characters be it good or bad. Everything about this film is great but , the ending is utter &?£1 , I was expecting this sort of finale that the film leads you up to believe is going to happen but it never does Overall 4 out of 5 stars , amazing film but rubbish ending (Defiantly worth a rent )

I am an absolute horror film lover and have watched some awful rubbish in the past but this was really good. Was twisted and simple but kept you interested. Not scary but very gory and sick. Great idea tho and brill actress. Id give it a high 8/10. Enjoy :-)

A breathe of fresh air for the horror genre, this great film made by the Twisted Twins (aka Jen and Sylvia Soska) is darkly funny, incredibly stylish and packed with subtle and smart subtext that lingers long in the brain after viewing. And Katharine Isabelle is bloody brilliant (literally) too! Highly recommended.
