Description

1976: A timid sound engineer (Toby Jones) arrives in Italy to work on a mysterious horror film, mixing bloodcurdling screams with the grotesque sounds of hacked vegetables. But as the onscreen violence seeps into his consciousness reality and fantasy become blurred and a nightmare starts to awake… Daringly original and masterfully constructed, this inspired homage to 70s Giallo horror is a devastating assault on the eyes, ears and brain, drawing comparisons with the films of David Lynch and being hailed as a modern cult masterpiece.

I know that people who don't like this are likely to be accused of not getting it, however you can "get it" and think that it is boring, pretentious and a lot of style over substance. It is well shot, well produced but it is totally without point and if you wish to watch an art house film that teaches you how to make sound effects in a 70's film then this is for you. Only gets 2 stars for a good performance by Toby Jones. Also not a horror film. Twaddle.

This is not a horror film, so I’ve no idea why it’s labelled as horror. If you like David Lynch, Lars Von Trier and Gaspar Noe you will love this film. If you don’t know those directors then this is probably not the film for you. Yes it’s about a guy doing the sound for a 70s horror film. But you don’t get to see the film he’s working on, only his reaction to it. It’s largely a film about exploitation; the people making the exploitation film are as exploited as the subject matter that they’re working on, everyone is using everyone and all are corrupted in the end. However that’s my take on it; it’ll certainly get you thinking and you’ll be thinking about it long after it ends. I’m amazed this film got made and funded in the UK. Makes a change from the usual Notting Hill / Four Weddings / Billy Elliot nostalgic patriotic claptrap that usually gets made here. If directors in the UK were encouraged to be more daring like this there’s a chance we could compete with innovative European cinema, instead of pandering to American audiences with sugar coated fluff. Anyway, I loved this film. But if you’re looking for horror there’s nothing to see here. It’s arty and strange, like something you might see in the Tate Modern. If you’re in the mood for chase sequences, blood and frights then this really isn’t the film you’re looking for.

An outstanding performance by Toby Jones, and an amazingly oblique aural homage to 70s and early 80s Italian giallo movies. Along with Rob Zombie's 'Lords of Salem' I consider this to be one of the more outstanding of recent 'horror' movies. But buyer beware - if you definition of horror is the standard Hollywood fare such as the 'Saw' franchise this is not the film for you. Rather, this is a difficult and challenging piece charting the protagonist's psychological dissolution and, typical of the giallo genre, the trajectory of that dissolution is not presented in terms of a readily comprehensible resolution or within the context of a clearly defined plot/narrative. If you prefer your horror more grindhouse than arthouse, look elsewhere.

If you are a big fan of Italian 70s horror, and "odd" films (like Eraserhead) this might be right up your alley, yet if it is its oddness will not be that "odd". I thought it was okay, starts off really well, but does turn in on itself somewhat (kind of intentional I know). I kept watching waiting for it to get really strange, but it just became rather odd.

I was waiting for something, anything to happen, but sadly nothing did. Wow, his receipt was never paid by the secretary and the director was a bit of a dick! - OK, so go crazy and hack them to bits with a mike stand… Or alternatively, you could internalise your feelings for 2 hours and stare at the wall as Toby Jones seems to do the whole time. I love strange films, and I hoped this would be one of those, but instead it was just dull. I am really disappointed.

Terrible. What you get is a perfect evocation of what it must have been like to dub a Dario Argento film in the '70s. But showing the dubbing process for 90 minutes does not a feature film make. There is no story or character development. Another Film Council funded turkey. Avoid at all costs.
