Description

Cheyenne is a former rock star who is still rocking the Goth look. Now 50, he relives the days of superstardom with avid young fan and best friend Mary (Eve Hewson). Living off his royalties he rattles around his grand Dublin mansion until the death of his estranged father calls him to New York. Reunited with his family, Cheyenne discovers a secret that sends him across America. On a journey through the Midwest, full of surprises and surreal encounters, from New York socialites to ethical gun-shop owners to a reunion with old friend David Byrne of Talking Heads, Cheyenne is on the road trip of his life.

Nice colours, great soundtrack but apart from this, a very disappointing film. The languorous performance from Penn grates after a while and the rambling storyline just confuses and drags. So much was promised from such good ingredients but it just never happens.
  • A movie for yourself.

With Sean Penn owning this movie with an ethereal yet slightly comic appearance, 'This Must Be Place' is for those who enjoy films with deep contemplation and a story driven by character's interactions rather than the journey itself.

Sean Penn is a fragile goth dressed in black. A rock star living in Dublin until he gets the call that his father has died. This is ok. It's got some surreal observations. But pretty much thin on the ground as a story. Sorrentino's other movies (Consequence of Love and Family Friend) share a sense of the macabre and grotesque.; and they are beautfully filmed (he trained as a photographer) and are stronger than this movie. Here you feel he's compromised for the US audience when he should just carry on making strong Italian films. This tries too hard and I got bored by the pace. Like waiting on Warhol to say something great; and then it's just 'gee'. Sedated.

Well now Sean what on earth have they persuaded you to do.Perhaps leave the place where we have seasons ,politics and grounded relationships. This film is epitomised by the pathetic weak and half camp dialogue one is asked to engage,it just doent work. This stuff is just ridden with over intellectualisation and makes disjointed comments on obsure unimportant nonsense. It doesnt even qualify for arthouse as here most would identify with a theme or subject, neither are present in this. Many of us are beginning to appreciate your politics and exploration of things which entertain and matter through film.If you want to mime then wear tights and jump on a stage ,really didnt see any of you in this charade.
