Description

Ealing Studios’ output from the 1940s and 1950s helped define what was arguably the golden age for British cinema. It fostered great directors such as Alexander Mackendrick and Robert Hamer, while giving stars such as Alec Guinness and Peter Sellers the chance to shine. With iconic performances from Alec Guinness, Peter Sellers and Herbert Lom, The Ladykillers is quintessential Ealing. Director Alexander Mackendrick’s film centres on a criminal gang planning their next job, who find themselves boarding with an innocent old lady who thinks they are musicians. When the gang set out to kill Mrs Wilberforce, they run into one problem after another, and they get what they deserve. Mackendrick’s last film as director before his move to Hollywood, The Ladykillers remains one of the best British comedies ever made.

When I bought this movie it was 4k Dolby Vision, it has now been downgraded to hd ! Studio Canal please sort this mess out, it’s not only this movie but numerous others have also suddenly appeared as HD. Apple and Studio Canal have had plenty of time to sort this out, but over 2 months later many movies have not been reinstated to 4K.This will make consumers think twice before buying off this store.

The British Film Institute rate this the 13th Best British Film of all time, I have for some time rated it my all time favourite. This 1955 Ealing Studio Classic, that stars Alec Guinness, with an excellent cast in support, see 5 hardened criminals carry out a sophisticated security van robbery. What they hadn’t bargained for, was the naive old lady Mrs Wilberforce, played by Katie Johnson, whose spare bedroom was let out to Professor Marcus (Alec Guinness) under false pretences, so that he and his fellow criminals could plan their robbery. For anyone who has not seen this great comedy, you must not confuse it with the 2004 remake, which should never have been released and may have put people off, if they had not seen the original. Now, back to the plot, I don’t want to spoil the storyline for those about to watch it for the first time but let’s just say that the naive Mrs Wilberforce, will leave you wondering if she was as naive as we were lead to believe. At £5.99, you will not get better value than this, it’s a film you will watch many, many times and never get tired of. Martin Stockport
