Description

On a deserted Russian Arctic island, two men work diligently at a small meteorological station. Their task is to take regular readings from their partly radioactive surroundings and relay this crucial data on to headquarters via radio - their only bridge to the outside world. For a seasoned pro like Sergei, a gruff man in his fifties, this job has become routine. During the years he has spent in extreme isolation, he has learned to take this task very seriously. His new work partner is the fresh-faced Pavel, a bright-eyed college graduate assigned to spend the summer at the station. The two men have little in common, with Pavel sticking to the company of his MP3 and video games to avoid the bullish, vaguely threatening presence of Sergei. The balance tips one day when Sergei leaves his post to go fishing for trout in a nearby lagoon. He has entrusted Pavel to do the readings and radio them through to headquarters as required. Inexperienced Pavel misses the appointed reading time and falsifies the logs to cover it up. Worse yet, there is terrible news for Sergei from HQ. Intimidated and uneasy, Pavel keeps quiet, unable to bring himself to share the distressing news with Sergei. When the truth finally emerges, its inevitable consequences play out against a desolate backdrop of thick fog, sharp rocks, crashing waves, and the Arctic Sea.

I didn't know anything about this movie, just rented it by chance. However, for a film set in a bleak Arctic wasteland with only two characters, I was gripped from the start until the end. Yes it's slow compared to your average Hollywood thriller, but the tension ramps up with a slow crescendo as the cabin fever sets in. The landscape is portrayed with a bleak beauty. The cinematography and sound design are excellent and the film rewards your patience as the narrative kicks in. Unlike many Hollywood films you get a real sense of empathy for both protagonists, even though neither are particularly likeable at first. The film had a rare blend of cerebrality, action, beauty and I'd thoroughly recommend it to anyone who doesn't have a morbid fear of movies with subtitles.

This is an excellent film, but I think you have to set your mind up to watch it. Sit down with no distractions, a hot cup of something, and enter a cold, isolated wastland and watch two men lose their minds and social values....slowly. It's an experience just to watch this film and has put me off treking to some cold wilderness for the forseeable future! Genius.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film from start to finish. It helped me escape my world for a few moments and see a totally different one. In society there are rules but in the middle of the Arctic Circle, with one other man, anything can happen. Rules begin to become transparent. It is quite slow and the characters are simple but honest and very real. Great acting too and I really loved the music, especially the very last track at the credits. If anyone knows it, please let me know what it is because I can't read Russian. Enjoy! :)

Far from being an "action flick" it certainly grips you with its quiet intensity. The cinematography is superb. Grigory Dobrygin star is rising. Popogrebsky is on a par with Tarkovsky for me. Thoroughly recommended. Русские прибывают!

Takes a good 15 minutes to get going, but you find out why as the atmosphere builds as does your loyalty to the characters -or not... It's a different to the usual Hollywood stuff we're all used to, but be patient and you'll find yourself sitting on the edge of your seat :) I think Russia are going to start producing some cracking films shortly.

I enjoyed this - it is a bit slow, and probably could have been a half hour shorter. It's certainly an aquired taste and the storyline isn't particularly innovative but the characters are set-up superbly and this made the film riveting (for me). The cinematography is astounding; The film is worth seeing for it's beauty alone but I'd stay clear if you're an action fan.
