  • a thinking person's film

Thoroughly enjoyed this film although I'd suggest you'd need to be in the right frame of mind to watch it, or at least expect it to be a slow-paced thriller. It is a beautifully shot, sombre film, tense with real-life drama instead of the glitz and glamour of the well-polished, standard fast cut-away hollywood action movie. Clooney provides plenty of gravitas with limited dialogue whilst Placido effortlessly simmers opposite him. There is plenty to engage in both characters given their futile efforts at redemption.
  • Nicely shot but …what was the point?

Within the first few minutes, the hero does something that makes it very hard to empathise with him. From then on it is slow paced, atmospheric and has some beautiful landscape photography but by the end... it all just seemed pretty pointless.

Very Boring - build up throughout or you think so but nothing happens through out the whole movie apart from the beginning and i'm mean the first 10min worth watching.

I loved this. But it won't be for everyone. So people should be aware that this is not the Bourne Identity. It is however well scripted, shot and acted. Builds slowly and methodically but comes to the boil nicely. The characters are well developed and by the end you will care what happens to them. Personally I thought it was great. I was genuinely surprised that this has received so many negative ratings. If you like Coen brothers movies and that type of thing then I think you'll enjoy this. But if you prefer films like Thor or Django Unchained then give this a swerve. Gets a big thumbs up from me though.

Some of the reviews would have you believe that this was a bad film. It is not. I think it falls short in places..some parts were hard to follow and work out who was who, and who was doing what and why etc. There were also some jumps in the film from one scene to another without any real links. However The last 20 minutes were very good though and overall I enjoyed it. George Clooney is proving to be one of the greatest screen actors of our generation.

I was very dissapointed with this film; there was absolutley no story line, the acting was basic, and it was incredibly slow moving - i could give a summary of this film in one sentence - nothing happened. If you enjoy looking at George Clooney, this was great, as all you saw was him. Vey poor.

Really enjoyed this movie, it's NOT a fast action shoot 'em up. I have read the book so knew what I was getting into but it's really not for everyone. The slow pace could and by the sounds below reviews has frustrate people. But I found it very relaxing. For those of you that enjoyed it try the book.

The American is beautifully shot, well considered and thought provoking. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and having read the numerous poor reviews here, I felt compelled to write my own opinion to redress the balance. Great film, rent it if you're not sure.
