Description

Synecdoche, New York tells the incredible story of one man’s seemingly insane mission to create a miniature version of New York – all under the roof of an enormous rented warehouse. In this hilarious tale, where nothing is what it seems, will our hero Caden realise his creative ambition or be lost forever in the surreal world of his own making?

It’s from that ‘Mulholland' school of “I need an explanation for most of what is going on” but if you can get past that, it’s a brilliant film in many respects. It doesn’t have the universal appeal of Eternal Sunshine but if you’re in a reflective mood, this is excellent viewing.

this isn't a comedy. it's a dark, complex, post-modern existential tragedy with a few funny moments. i can't recommend it highly enough

This film blew me away. The most moving thing i’ve seen in many years. Also I'm glad I bought it and didn’t rent it as I know I will be re-watching this a lot. Concluding thoughts: Just yes.

Quite simply the greatest film ever made. Charlie Kaufmann's panoptic vision is brought to stunning fruition by the only person capable of doing so: Charlie Kaufmann. This is not a comedy. This is the answer to all of your questions.

Self indulgent...and that's the point, probably. This film is a deep , dark , brutal mirror. Pretensious, moi?
  • Unusually moving.

Like most of Kauffman's work, the conceptual realisation of an initial idea into film is executed with utterly breathtaking self awareness. If you liked 'Being John Malkovich' then I recommend you watch this. Also, yes it is 'strange' like most of his work, but that does not make it anything near a comedy, so I don't think itunes should have labelled it as such.
