This is a frustrating movie in so many ways as it is just so atmospheric and reeks of the Sixties - that is both its strength and weakness. The first half is a textbook portrayal of a classic spy thriller, dripping with genuine period detail. The second half is also textbook - but for sixties scifi with some special effects and plot developments that really belong in the Avengers. All in all, though, it's worth watching, not just for Caine's performance as the antihero Palmer. It's Nigel Green who steals the show, really, as a fantastic stereotype of the British officer class. Watch it and drink in the atmosphere!

Please get an HD cut of this film in, iTunes… The remastered widescreen Blu-Ray versions do it much justice. This one does not.

This probably the best spy movie along with Funeral in Berlin and the Billion Dollar Brain.

This is an inferior 4:3 aspect ratio transfer. It really let's down what is otherwise a fantastic film.

Micheal Caine is fantastic as Harry Palmer, the spy that is probably closer to the truth than James Bond ever was. If you love spy thrillers with a bit of comedy and a touch of retro cool then buy this film! Also look out for the sequels, A Funeral in Berlin and The Billion Dollar Brain.
