Description

Innovative director Spike Jonze collaborates with celebrated author Maurice Sendak to bring one of the most beloved books of all time to the big screen in "Where the Wild Things Are," a classic story about childhood and the places we go to figure out the world we live in. The film tells the story of Max, a rambunctious and sensitive boy who feels misunderstood at home and escapes to where the Wild Things are. Max lands on an island where he meets mysterious and strange creatures whose emotions are as wild and unpredictable as their actions. The Wild Things desperately long for a leader to guide them, just as Max longs for a kingdom to rule. When Max is crowned king, he promises to create a place where everyone will be happy. Max soon finds, though, that ruling his kingdom is not so easy and his relationships there prove to be more complicated than he originally thought.

Wonderful film with a warm heart that evokes the capricious nature of being a child. This is probably too much for kids to understand, however.
  • Strange yet beautiful

I didn't know what to think of this the first time I watched it, well certainly a mixer of emotions but the second time, once I got passed the strangeness of it, I found it brilliant. The music is superb and I seem to find myself just replying the music over and over, each time in a sort of dream like state. The film makes you think and it's beautifully done but my only criticism is that it is a little too abstract, it needs a little bit more of a base but otherwise it's a fantastic film, definitely worth the money!

  • A movie about being a child, not a children's movie

I went to see this at the cinema, taking my sons along (7 and 4). We'd read the book together, as my dad had done for me when I was their age, and I was interested to find out how it would adapt. It was soon obvious that the director of this film had a very specific vision in mind. He wasn't trying to recreate the book for the screen, nor to try and produce a sugar coated story with a happy little ending that'd be oh so easy to crunch popcorn to. He was making a movie with a narrative that mirrored a child's experience of the world around them. How much of the world is explained to children? Not much, and the director puts you back in that place. How much of the world can be strange or unfair to a child? Lots, and you get that too through the dialogue and the cinematography. How important a family connections? Huge, and that goes across to through Max's emotions. The wild things are representations of things max has to deal with and his own emotions - he can't really control them, but he tries! My eldest son loved the film and, once I got the idea and allowed myself to go with it, so did I. This can make you feel like a child again, and not in some rose-tinted nostalgic way. Perhaps that's something we should all be doing a little more of as adults... You'll not get something clearcut from this film, but if you're open to it, it'll resonate with your emotions and subconscious for days and days afterwards. Visually the film is stunning, and its worth a rent on that point, but I'll be buying it now its on itunes and I don't think it'll be leaving my ipod anytime soon. As for those other reviews (and if you've got this far), this is a film to make your own mind up about, I cant stress that enough. If you are a film lover or you have kids, it's rewarding on lots of levels. If you want popcorn and candy, go watch a Disney.
