Description

On August 7th 1974, Philippe Petit stepped out on a wire connecting New York’s twin towers. After nearly an hour dancing on the wire, he was arrested, taken for psychological evaluation, then brought to jail and finally released. This is his story. Following six and a half years of dreaming, Petit spent eight months in NYC planning the execution of the coup. Aided by a team of friends and accomplices, Petit had to find a way to bypass the WTC’s security; to smuggle the steel cable and rigging equipment into the towers; to pass the wire between the two rooftops; to anchor the wire and tension it to withstand the winds and swaying of the buildings. James Marsh’s documentary brings Petit’s extraordinary adventure to life through the testimony of Philippe himself and some of the co-conspirators who helped him create the unique and magnificent spectacle that became known as: “the artistic crime of the century”.

I saw this at the cinema and came out stunned. Philip Petit loved the high wire from an early age and practised at home and became increasingly ambitious in his presentation until he set himself the ultimate goal - walking between the twin towers. Oddly, whilst there is film footage of his earlier exploits, there is none of the twin towers walk - the film has to use photographs they took instead. The planning is all present and a dramatisation of the actual ascent is there too like some kind of Hollywood thriller. The reaction soof friends to what he was doing, the description by the cop sent to arrest him are so powerful - funny and emotionally powerful. The description of one of his friends who describes his walk across the towers had me sobbing in the cinema. This is like nothing else I've ever seen - so just watch it!

Well...I mean it's alright, if you're in to tight rope walking! It's a real story. By real I don't mean 'it really happened' (even though it did) I mean it's genuine, not over-hyped, told as it was. To be part of it must have been incredible and the movie evokes that sense of adventure you only get when you remember something you achieved as part of a team. I'd rent, not buy. But do rent it.
