From one of the greatest filmmakers of our time, Steven Spielberg, comes an epic film telling the story of a young boy's determination to survive in the face of the devastating events that transpire after Japan invades Shanghai on December 8, 1941.

Tedious version of a great book. Moments of leaden boredom. Posterity has not been kind to this film.

Empire of the Sun is a true epic, beautifully filmed and moving. An all time favourite and glorious to finally be able to watch in HD. One of Spielberg's very best.

To me Empire of the Sun is one of the most underappreciated movies ever, it is a beautiful film, brilliantly captured and amazingly put together. I love this film and recommend it to everyone who thinks they know Steven Speilberg
The origins of Ballard

J.G. Ballard is one of Britains most important writers and will remain so for a long time to come. This is essentially Jim Ballards autobiography, with a few modifications - and well worth the watch. Spielberg's adaptation is pretty good in the main and does the book proud in many respects. Like most movies there are parts missing or inventions in plot and aim, but otherwise it is very watchable. However, like that well worn cliche - the literary text will always outshine the film. Great stuff all the same.
Well worth the watch

This is a great film! Funny in places and heart breaking in others
NB my dad was part of the sound crew who won Bafter for Best Sound with this film (Gary Weir & Collin Charles). Photography is amazing too.
This is not an action film for those who have not seen, but a tale of a journey.
Spielberg at his Best!!

Spielberg cast unknown british school boy Christian Bale in the lead of this epic telling of J.G. Ballard's book
