Description

Francis Ford Coppola's epic masterpiece features Marlon Brando in his Oscar ®-winning role*as the patriarch of the Corleone family. Director Coppola paints a chilling portrait of the Sicilian clan's rise and near fall from power in America, masterfully balancing the story between the Corleone's family life and the ugly crime business in which they are engaged. Based on Mario Puzo's best-selling novel and featuring career-making performances by Al Pacino, James Caan and Robert Duvall, this searing and brilliant film garnered ten Academy Award® nominations, and won three including Best Picture of 1972.

Quite simply this is a towering achievement. So many successful films lose their lustre over time; the Godfather endures. Brando, Pacino, Caan, Keaton - all give the performances of their careers. I've so often chanced upon the film while channel hopping and every time, no matter where in the story I pick it up, I'm always hooked. I was once standing with the remote in my hand for 45 minutes because I was just mesmerised by it all over again.
  • Magnificent Portrait of Organized Crime

This is by far the best movie ever to give a portrait organized crime, this movie goes deep inside and shows it all inside out.. With superb acting by especially Al Pacino as Michael Corleone and Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone this movie shows how one of the head mafia families in New York works, it gives a detailed picture of how their business runs and what kinda chances they got to take on their business, for example their denial to step inside the narcotic business brings on a lot of troubles, but also it shows what kinda sacrifices they make, every day could be their last day. Al Pacino shines above all in this movie, as the smart boy of the family he returns after fighting a war for his country, at that time not involved in the family business, but it doesn't take long before the war breaks lose and he see no other ways than to step in and fight for his family. This is definitely a "must see" masterpiece!
  • I finally watched it

So, aged 45, I finally gave in, found an evening to myself and watched what I knew would be a cinema masterpiece uninterrupted for the very time having deliberately managed to never see even a single scene until now. A sort of special treat, like going to see the Mona Lisa or Taj Mahal, And it has so much to offer, perhaps in these post Tarantino days where routine movie violence is more common place, I was less affected than audiences of the 70’s would have been. But what remains after first viewing is the extraordinary beauty of the rural scenes of Sicilian life. You just felt you were there and they were entirely authentic. Marlon Brando was so constant in his portrayal, and each of his sons/partners were so matter of fafactly naive in all their bravado. You felt the passing of the traditional honour between the warring patriarchs. I can’t wait to see part 2..

There are no down sides in the Godfather! There is not one bad actor! Al Pacino cool and slick and Brando powerful and calculating! The actors are very powerful, as are all the cast! The plot, the filming and the film are beautiful!
