Based on the story, this was the first film adaption of this creative story. The film is portrayed Brilliantly, Chilling in some parts, Frightening In The Next. It gives a brilliant represenation of the story. It's well-planned storyline will have you hung on throughout and it's Twist Ending will shock you to the core. That i promise..

The first time I saw this I was a few years after I'd seen David Cronenbergs remake. And I found this a very brilliant piece of story telling. Also it was frightening in places. Considering that it's not really a gory film (as the remake was :P), its very effective with mood and ambience. David Hedison (better know from the TV series "Voyage to the bottom of the sea") plays as a scientist whos out to invent the safest mode of transport for mankind to reach the stars. But as we know .. nature doesn't like to be played around with! And Hedison spends the second half of the movie with no dialogue at all and his head covered .. two of an actors most needed weapons .. speech and eyes .. and yet he is incredible. Of course it becomes clear to us as to why he can't talk .. and doesn't want to be seen by his, increasingly nervous wife (whom also played a great part in being not only the distressed lover .. but the voice, eyes and emotion of the audience. In fact one could see this film as a theatre piece. And it is extremely effective. With good special FX, (1950's) that stand up to the test of time, and a story which is truely sad and thoughtful. One is left feeling most empathic toward the characters. That they didn't mean for the events that happened to happen .. but there we are, victims of fate. The 1980's remake is also a great film but in a different way, more sophisticated FX, and more toward the present day situations .. but that film could never have been what it is without this film. This film is for true lovers of great film making, thriller, and superb ambience.
