Description

A powerful, true story about members of the Navajo tribe who proudly served the U.S. in WWII as code talkers by using their native language as a code to relay information to military leaders. Unbeknownst to the Navajo is the dark secret that they're to be killed by American soldiers if one of them is in danger of being captured.

Appalling. Dreadful acting. Dire plot. Predictable story line. Laughable action scenes.

Terrible script. Every B-standard war move cliche. Totally unrealistic battles. All the soldiers were way too old. Lots of hammy acting - particularly from Cage. And to top it all, border-line racist.

I found myself wondering when it would finish, even before the half-way point. That's not good. It's a film trying to be good, but missing the mark. It wants to be deep, meaningful, thoughtful. It could have been. It promised to be. Doesn't deliver. Cage doesn't pull off the anti-hero role. It's all too jingoistic. I'll give it a two-star for costumes and special effects (though the CGI falls short too).

John Woo’s action scenes are ambitiously mounted and attention grabbing, with plenty of men being bloodily peppered by gunfire, limbs being blown off and men torched alive. The problem is the scenes in between aren’t that interesting, and brutal war realism has been done before and better in "Saving Private Ryan". Despite a refreshingly naturalistic performance from Adam Beach as the young Navajo codetalker, this is pretty much a parade of war clichés, with none too memorable characters.
