  • A long-time favourite.

This has been a personal favourite of mine since the first time I saw it so many years ago. When young Grace and her horse Pilgrim are both seriously injured in a shocking accident that opens the film, her acerbic, workaholic mom drags them from New York to Montana to try and get Robert Redford’s “horse whisperer” to try and heal the traumatised horse. As it turns out it’s not just the horse that will be healed . This sets all involved on a long but gentle 3-hour exploration about coming to terms and healing from trauma, set against a stunningly photographed depiction of rural American life. It may sound syrupy but it’s themes are sincere and it lets itself have time to explore them with depth. It’s storytelling is done with really beautiful cinematography by Robert Richardson which evoke something mythic and spiritual in horses and our relationship with them. The performances are excellent across the board, even in smaller roles. The film’s patient tempo makes its final coda all the more powerful, so for me it remains a powerful film with a gentle touch. I hope you love it as much as I do.

snuggle up to this on a rainy afternoon under a blanket - loads of soft lighting around RR - you could spend 2.49 on a lot worse.
