From an insane asylum, aged composer Salieri recalls when young Mozart gained favor at Emperor Joseph II’s court. Salieri, consumed by jealousy, rues his own mediocrity and resents that God blessed the vulgar Mozart with divine genius. Unable to match Mozart’s talent, Salieri sabotages his career and secretly commissions the grueling *Requiem*, leading to Mozart’s downfall.
