Description

Dive into the turbulent waters of high school with this heartwarming action comedy about a shy teenager who discovers that she’s part of a legendary royal lineage of mythical sea krakens and that her destiny, in the depths of the oceans, is bigger than she ever dreamed. Learning to be an all-powerful sea creature while hiding among humans is hard enough for Ruby, but to make matters worse, her super popular new bestie, Chelsea, is secretly a mermaid! Mermaids have been battling the krakens for eons to rule the ocean, but Chelsea has come to land to finally put an end to that conflict. However, when Chelsea double-crosses her, Ruby will ultimately need to embrace who she is and GO BIG to protect those she loves most.

With the exception of the first two Shrek films, Dreamworks animation never hits it right for me. The humour isn’t as clever, and the design not as refined, the story not as engaging as Pixar or Disney stuff Same goes for this. Within 5 minutes I knew it wasn’t going to be for me.

While not blockbuster worthy as Puss In Booth the Last Wish or The Bad Guys, Ruby Gillman is a nice original film and filled with great characters and story. The animation is adorable and it was a fun film. An average film in Dreamworks’ list, but thats not a bad thing. Sometimes, a little average is good. :) And to be honest… I feel this ‘coming of age’ film was better handled here than ‘Turning Red’. At least here no member of the family is the bad guy!
