A BITTER PILL

BABYLON, Difficult to LIKE, Impossible to LOVE, Easy to ADMIRE. Loved the production design, loved the music, cinematography, Loved Brad Pitt and Jean Smart.. an amazing stand out cameo from Toby Maguire (in the films most horrific section),. Some great HISTORY OF CINEMA moments.. but scuppered by some very bad taste, and Margot Robbie. She remains hideously unlikeable from her first to her last moment.. I’m SURE as an audience we SHOULD have liked her at some point.. in a film about ultimate EXCESS even IT reaches a point where LESS is MORE. Damien Chazelle IS a GREAT film maker..WHIPLASH, LA,LA LAND, Masterpieces,. but as usual.. when given too much rope…
Riotous debauchery

An experience in over consumption in every form. A cross between Moulin Rouge, Get Shorty and the Hangover! Loved it!

Shocking, wild, beautiful, grotesque. An incredible movie with great performances by Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt.
Devoid of Merit

I’m a huge fan of Chazelle’s previous work: First Man, La La Land, and, for me, the perfect Whiplash. In fact, for my money, Whiplash is the greatest movie about music ever made. A top ten film.
And now there is Babylon, a movie devoid of all merit.
It’s really difficult to understand where this went wrong. There is no story to speak of, the writing is poor and unfocused, and, as a consequence, the performance are - to put it kindly - uneven.
It is, fundamentally, a film which does not understand what it wants to be. It’s too crass to work as a love song to Hollywood (and, besides, La La Land did it much better). It lacks the necessary bite to satirise the movie industry (and Altman, with The Player, long beat Chazelle to the punch). And it does not work as a noir (though the final third suggests that this is where the Director wanted to go). As LA noir, LA Confidential beats this to a pulp every time.
Tonally, it’s off. Structurally, it’s all over the place. Heaven knows it is too long. Way, way, way too long.
In fact, and I write this with sincere sadness, I struggle to find anything positive at all. It’s a film which should not exist.
No story

Really not a lot to say as was a bizarre film with not much to enjoy - was praying for it to end after a while.

The film has its moment, but, ultimately, it’s just a poorly constructed film. Too many scenes, many way too long, and just boring. I found the length of some scenes excruciatingly painful. The film just wouldn’t end. At least an hour too long and really lacking a cohesive direction. A truly talented director that, sadly, is having his Tenent moment.
So bad!

I love Whiplash and La La Land. I hate this. Overlong, muddled, grotesque. Like several average movies were put in a blender. A couple fun scenes but we're talking 15 minutes out of 189 minutes.
